What are bearing clearances / what does C3 mean?

Clearance refers to the internal clearance of a bearing between its raceways and rolling elements. A c3 or greater bearing, where the clearance is greater than standard are typically used is higher speed applications where there may be material expansion due to heat produced through friction.

It is not recommended using a C3 bearing on an application where it is not specifically required. We always recommend referring to the manufacturer’s literature to determine the clearance of bearings required.

Clearances are categorised as follows :- C1 is a range less than C2. C2 is a range less than normal. C3 is a range greater than normal, C4 is a range greater than C3 and C5 is a range greater than C4.

What does preload mean?

Preload is a internal load or “negative clearance” given to a bearing before operation.

What is the difference between metal and rubber seals/shields?

Metal covers on a bearing are referred to as shields which offers good dirt resistance and grease sealing properties and offer high speed performance however they do not totally seal the bearing and offer economical water resistance. Rubber seal bearing, commonly referred to as 2RS, totally seal the bearing and offer better dirt resistance and grease sealing than a metal shielded (ZZ) bearing and also good protection against water. However because of contact with both the inner and out rings some friction is produced making them more limited to high speeds than metal sealed or open bearings.

Do you have listings for bearings for all cars/bikes/washing machines etc?

We generally do not know exactly what bearings go in any particular machine as manufacturers can be protective of this information as they may have their own parts distributors it would like its customers to use. However if you can supply us with bearing codes or sizes we should be able to help on the vast majority of enquiries.

I can’t find the bearing/seal/belt on you website?

If you are having any problem finding the correct part on our system or indeed for anything else please feel free to call or email us and we will do our very best to help you as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I do not know the correct spec/clearance of bearing I require?

While we will give you any help we can and should be able to identify the bearing size for you we cannot always tell you whether you require higher clearance bearings or what type of seals you require. Manufacturer’s handbooks or advice should be followed.
